Forum hosting January community meeting on security breach

community_meeting_11_057On Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 3:00p.m. – 4:30p.m. in the Union Auditorium of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, we will hold a community meeting with representatives from Finance and Administration, Information Technology Services (ITS), Human Resources (HR),  and Internal Communications (University Gazette). This will be your opportunity to hear firsthand what happened, ask questions, and give your input. We will send several e-mail and snail mail (flyers) reminders about the event. It is important that anyone with concerns attend. Community meetings are officially sanctioned by the University as work time, however, you should speak to your supervisor to coordinate being away from the office.

A message from Matt Brody regarding recent security breach

First, the University will be offering the option of 12-months of paid credit monitoring to any individual whose Social Security number or other personal identifying information has been inadvertently exposed as part of the recent data breach incident. Arrangements are under way now to make this happen as soon as possible. Second, all of the individuals who received an initial letter of notification regarding the data breach will receive a follow-up letter soon after the first of the year that informs them of the opportunity to receive the credit monitoring. This second communication will include a return address from the University and the Carolina logo to better distinguish it from other more routine mail communications, especially junk mail. This communication will also review some of the information contained in the initial communication and provide a reminder about the on-line FAQs, as well as the call center for follow-up questions. Finally, for those who may want to confirm more immediately if they overlooked an initial written communication or otherwise confirm if their information was exposed as part of this incident, they may contact the call center assisting the University at 1.866.458.3184. The call center is available to answer calls, in English and in Spanish, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday, until February 10, 2014. We acknowledge that there is disappointment and strong feelings regarding this incident and that is absolutely understandable. Likewise, every situation like this generates feedback that presents opportunities to enhance the University’s response. The University will continue to monitor this situation closely and do its very best to address the concerns of all involved. Please do share these updates with the Employee Forum membership. Let me also express our appreciation for the constructive feedback provided by you and others as details of this incident have been shared. As has been previously communicated, the University regrets that this data breach occurred and extends its sincere apologies to all of those affected.   2. Contacting the call center at 1.866.458.3184. The call center is available to answer calls, in English and in Spanish, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday, until February 10, 2014. NOTE: This is the best option if all you want to do is verify your information was/was not exposed in the data breach
  3. Sending an email to incident_questions@unc.edu  NOTE:  Emails to this address will receive follow-up from a University employee. Anyone who does not have ready access to email can always approach their School/Division HR Office, who can then send an e-mail on their behalf.
