Forum will vote on creation of staff award on April 6

From the University Gazette: The forum is considering the Rebecca Clark Staff Award for Moral Courage. Clark, a former staff member now deceased (pictured left), was a political activist and civil rights organizer who fought against unequal pay and workplace discrimination. Only staff members would be eligible for the award, which, if approved by Chancellor Carol L. Folt, would provide a plaque and $2,500 for the winner.

A final vote on the creation of the award will take place at the next full Forum meeting on April 6 from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Hitchcock Room at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center. All staff are welcome to attend with the permission of their supervisor.

Forum represented on Student Stores RFP Advisory Committee

Employee Forum chair Charles Streeter and Division 6 Representative Katie Turner are currently serving on the RFP Advisory Committee.

The Student Stores RFP Advisory Committee’s role is to evaluate pertinent proposal materials along with the presentations that will be made by bidders for management of the Student Stores or the textbook operations, as applicable. The committee will be asked to share views on the pros and cons of each proposal. While the Committee will not recommend a specific course of action or a specific bidder, their views will inform Finance and Administration’s decision-making process.

The committee has been reassured that a decision whether to outsource has not been made, and that the University is under no obligation to accept a proposal to outsource.  Read the memo from Finance and Administration for a list of the committee's membership.

Former Employee Forum Chair Jackie Overton honored

Jackie Overton, former Employee Forum chair (pictured left with Chancellor Folt), was honored with a University Award for the Advancement Women at a recent ceremony. While Overton chaired the Forum, she advocated for women in the housekeeping department and was instrumental in restructuring and reforms in that department to ensure the safety and well-being of women workers.

Carolina Campus Community Garden receives Forum donation; Celebrates six years

The Employee Forum contributed funds toward the Carolina Campus Community Garden in March which will help supply the new greenhouse. Claire Lorch, Community Garden Education Coordinator, sees the value of the greenhouse as both education and as a means to "grow a greater variety of crops and eventually, more seedlings that we can give to the housekeepers." Read more about the celebration of the six year anniversary of the garden in the Gazette.

Staff enjoy outdoor yoga as part of Forum-sponsored 'Work Week Wind Down' class

About 30 staff members turned out last Thursday on a beautiful spring day for the first "Work Week Wind Down" outdoor yoga class. The class is the result of a partnership between the Employee Forum and Campus Rec to bring more options for work-site fitness to UNC employees. We hope for the continued success of the series. The class is currently booked for the next ten sessions, but be on the look out for your next opportunity to register in the fall.

A note from LGBTQ Center regarding HB2

In light of the passage of the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act (HB2) the LGBTQ Center of UNC-Chapel Hill wants to make everyone aware of the list of the location of gender non-specific bathrooms on our campus. The list can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/UNC-GNS-Bathrooms

The law that requires you to use the bathroom of the sex indicated on your birth certificate applies only to multi-stall bathrooms that are designated for use by a specific sex. Gender non-specific bathrooms are still accessible regardless of one’s assigned sex at birth or current gender marker on legal documents. If you experience or witness any type of harassment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression please report this immediately.

You can report to the LGBTQ Center at https://lgbtq.unc.edu/programs-services/report-harassment or by calling 919-843-5376. You can also report to the university through any of the following ways:
