Kevin Guskiewicz, Chancellor, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Kevin M. Guskiewicz, a neuroscientist, academic leader, and concussion researcher, is the 12th chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his appointment as chancellor, Guskiewicz served as the interim chancellor from February 2019 until December 2019. In that role, he held over 25 listening and learning sessions with constituents across campus. He was instrumental in shaping Carolina’s new strategic plan, Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good that outlines a roadmap for the University’s priorities moving forward. He relaunched the Tar Heel Bus Tour with 90 faculty and campus leaders, demonstrating Carolina’s commitment to the state.
A Kenan Distinguished Professor of Exercise and Sport Science, he has been a member of Carolina’s faculty since 1995. He is co-director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center. Guskiewicz is a nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions. He maintains an active research portfolio and is principal investigator or co-principal investigator on three active research grants totaling over $20 million. His groundbreaking work has garnered numerous awards and has influenced concussion guidelines in the NCAA and the NFL.
Prior to his appointment as interim chancellor in February 2019, Guskiewicz had served as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences – Carolina’s largest academic institution – since January 2016. With more than 16,000 undergraduate students and 2,500 graduate students, Guskiewicz made interdisciplinary teaching and research a cornerstone of his tenure. He championed the use of high-structure active learning techniques, and Carolina is a national leader in implementing these highly effective educational strategies. He significantly increased study abroad, academic internships and other experiential learning opportunities for Carolina students and oversaw work on a major revamp of UNC-Chapel Hill’s General Education curriculum.
Guskiewicz has been a UNC-Chapel Hill faculty member since 1995 and won the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (often called a “genius grant”) in 2011.
Bob Blouin, Provost, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Robert A. “Bob” Blouin is the Executive Vice Chancellor, Provost (“provost”), and Chief Academic Officer of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the university. The provost also has oversight responsibilities for budget and planning. A key mission of the provost is to ensure Carolina attracts, develops, and retains leading faculty members focused on inspiring students for success in a rapidly changing global economy.
During his tenure as dean, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy was recognized as one of the premier pharmacy programs in the world as evidenced by its rankings with U.S. News & World Reports, QS World University Rankings in Pharmacy and Pharmacology and AACP Grants and Contracts. In addition, the school initiated a first-of-its-kind professional degree granting partnership program in Asheville, North Carolina, which focuses on ambulatory care and rural health. Under Blouin’s leadership, the faculty research portfolio increased from $2 million in 2002 to $36 million in 2016, ranking second among the nation’s pharmacy schools. Blouin obtained a historic $100M gift from Dr. Fred Eshelman to create the Eshelman Institute for Innovation where he served as Director. He also led a cutting-edge effort to find creative ways to accelerate change in education and health care. He will continue to serve as the school’s Bryson Distinguished Professor.
Shayna Hill, UNC-Chapel Hill Employee Forum Chair
Shayna Hill received her Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She spent 20 years in New York and Los Angeles pursuing a career in acting, writing, and directing. She also performed improvisation comedy with the Los Angeles Second City Touring Company and the Second City Alumni Players. She began her professional career at UNC as a Parking Control Officer in 2007, she served as the Materials Manager at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, and as the Business Officer in the Department of Dental Ecology under Dr. Lauren Patton. Currently, she works as the Department Manager in Statistics and Operations Research. In December of 2014 Shayna completed her Master’s degree in Public Health here at UNC.
Becci Menghini, Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance
As Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance, Becci is responsible for a division that houses the University’s “people” offices: the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office and the Office of Human Resources. The Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance Division provides services and resources on campus to faculty, staff and students, including A to Z human resources; tailored training on how to be compliant with employment, EEO, and Title IX laws; effective bystander, prevention, and intervention resources; campaigns; training and tools for fostering an inclusive living, learning, and working environment; and a host of other University events to celebrate, reward, and inform the campus community.
Becci most recently served as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Workforce Strategy, Equity and Engagement at Carolina, a position she assumed in 2015. Prior to that, she served for six years as the chief of staff in the Office of the Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Becci has also worked in alumni relations and development. She served as executive director of the Alumni Association at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after spending eight years on the staff at the Wisconsin Alumni Association. She later returned to Madison, where she worked as a senior development officer with the Morgridge Institute for Research.
