Honoring Joe Straley, Professor of Physics Emeritus
RESOLUTION OF THE EMPLOYEE FORUM
THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
October 5 , 2005
WHEREAS, the Mission of the Employee Forum is to address constructively the concerns of the Employees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and
WHEREAS, these concerns include the recognition and honor of those members of our community who exemplify our highest ideals; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley was born into rural poverty in Paulding, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley worked his way through Bowling Green State University and Ohio State University, earning his Phd in physics; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley joined the faculty of UNC Chapel Hill in 1947, retiring from the Department of Physics in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley was a founder of the Community Church of Chapel Hill in 1953; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley received the Pegram Award for Excellence in Teaching of Physics in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley served as Chapel Hill Town Councilman from 1979-1982; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley, throughout his ninety years, was a tireless advocate for peace, security, freedom and justice for all people; and
WHEREAS, Joe Straley died on September 21, 2005
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Employee Forum honor the life and work of Joe Straley and Lucy Straley, his devoted wife of 66 years.
