Carolina Blood Drive Committee 2022-2023 Report

The Carolina Blood Drive Committee is responsible for planning and implementing two campus-wide blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross. Historically, the Holiday Carolina Blood Drive is held in December and the Carolina Blood Drive is held in late spring/early summer. Details of each drive can be found below.

A list of all committee members (forum delegates, campus volunteers, community members, and American Red Cross partners) can be found at the end of this report.

  • Holiday Carolina Blood Drive –

This year, the HCBD was held on Wednesday, December 7th from 7:30 am – 3:30 pm (2:30-3:30 unpublished) in Fetzer Gym. This was a Reading Day. Leading up to the drive, the committee met 6 times. Here is a look at the drive by the numbers:

    • Goal: 308
    • Total collected: 368 (up) – most units collected in a decade!
    • Final appointments: 370 (up)
    • Presenting donors: 310 (down)
    • First time donors: 106 (up)
    • Whole blood: 248 (up)
    • Power Red: 120 (down)
    • No show: 136 (up)
    • Walk-ins: 48 (down)
  • Carolina Blood Drive –

This year, the 35th annual Carolina Blood Drive was held on Wednesday, May 3rd from 7:00 am – 6:00 pm (unpublished hour 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm) in the Dean Smith Center. This was a Reading Day. A decision was made last year to hold the drive in May (as opposed to the usual June) to try to increase the donation numbers from the students who are still on campus before graduation. Despite some new challenges with an earlier drive (parking, fewer food donations, etc.), this proved to be a successful strategy. Leading up to the drive, the committee met 6 times. Here is a look at the drive by the numbers:

    • Goal: 510
    • Total collected: 556 (up from 510)
    • Final appointments: 555 (up from 525)
    • Presenting donors: 564 (up from 504)
    • First time donors: 172 (up from 104)
    • Whole blood: 400 (up from 359)
    • Power red: 156 (up from 151)
    • No show: 110 (up from 108)
      • Could have come later/early than appointment time
    • Walk-ins: 70 (down from 96)
      • Could be considered a walk-in if they came before/after their appointment time

Next year, the 2023 Holiday Carolina Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, December 7th in Fetzer Gym. As of the writing of this report, the committee has not yet determined if the 2024 Carolina Blood Drive will be held again in May or if it will shift back to June.
