Concerning Staff Priorities in the Next Development Campaign at UNC-Chapel Hill
Resolution of the Employee Forum
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
January 7, 2009

1. WHEREAS, the Mission of the Employee Forum is to constructively address the concerns of the Employees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including the presentation of staff concerns to University officials, University General Administration and the citizenry of North Carolina;

2. WHEREAS, the University will draft a development plan for a new cycle of fundraising activities; and

3.  WHEREAS, the previous Carolina First campaign, though extremely successful, did not broadly advertise fundraising initiatives unique to the needs and concerns of staff employees and specifically address their importance; and

4.  WHEREAS, though some initiatives designed to address critical staff needs and concerns do exist (such as the Carolina Family Scholarship and the Clerical Skills Program), development campaigns of the past have not successfully marketed a strategy to broadly address them as fundraising goals of the University; and

5.  WHEREAS, future development campaigns would be more beneficial for the University as a whole if they incorporated fundraising goals that included emphasis on the needs and concerns of staff employees; and

6.  WHEREAS, staff employees are an important demographic group within the University community and are regularly invited to contribute financially to the University’s development efforts;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Employee Forum respectfully requests Chancellor Holden Thorp, Vice Chancellor for Advancement Matthew Kupec, and the University Development Office include the creation and marketing of a “Staff Excellence & Enrichment Fund” fundraising initiative with achievable endowment levels and goals to support a variety of initiatives that directly benefit staff employees in the next University development campaign.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a minimum of two Employee Forum delegates should assist with the appropriation of the ‘Staff Excellence & Enrichment Fund” to staff initiatives based on the most critical needs and concerns as they change over time.

Signed on behalf of the Delegates of the Employee Forum,

Tommy Griffin, Chair
