RESOLUTION OF THE EMPLOYEE FORUM
THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
May 1, 1996
WHEREAS, the Mission of the Employee Forum is to address constructively the concerns of the Employees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and
WHEREAS, these concerns include the appropriate recognition of efforts made to improve the life, dignity and working conditions of these same Employees; and
WHEREAS, recent concerted efforts of this nature have been made by University officials to address long-standing issues related to the status of University Housekeepers; and
WHEREAS, these efforts include comprehensive initiatives carefully designed to improve the career opportunities, supervision, management and working conditions of these Employees; and
WHEREAS, these efforts have been abetted by organizational restructuring that has included the appointment of a new Division Director, increased emphasis on Human Resources issues within the Division and the radical reorganization of two University departments in order to address the perceived need for lasting, substantial and positive change within the Housekeeping Division; and
WHEREAS, that while the pay scale for Housekeepers and other entry level Employees is far from satisfactory, and deserves continued strivings toward improvement, the University Administration has made an honest, thorough, and diligent attempt to ameliorate conditions for Housekeepers within its sphere of authority;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Employee Forum gratefully recognizes the vigorous, forthright efforts of University Administrators to address the enduring concerns of Housekeepers and other low-paid Employees; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Employee Forum calls upon the University Administration and its leadership to continue its laudable efforts in this area and in its communications and dealings with external bodies of influence, such as General Administration, the State Legislature and the Governor’s Office, in order to secure salary increases and full funding of the State Pay Plan, in the effort to improve the lives of University Housekeepers and other Employees.
Signed on behalf of the Delegates of the Employee Forum
