Student Stores outsourced; Forum representatives clarify role in the process

After nearly nine months of discussions surrounding the possible outsourcing of Student Stores, Associate Vice Chancellor Brad Ives announced that Student Stores will be taken over by Barnes and Noble this summer. In response to a UNC press release claiming that the Student Stores RFP Committee "unanimously endorsed" Barnes and Noble, Ives clarified at a public meeting on April 22 that the advisory committee did not have responsibility for ultimately making the decision to outsource, but came to a consensus that Barnes and Noble offered the best deal for staff if the University were to consider outsourcing. The Student Stores RFP Committee charge was to "evaluate pertinent materials along with the presentations that will be made by bidders for management of the Student Stores or the textbook operations, as applicable." The Committee members were asked to share views on the pros and cons of each proposal and were not responsible for recommending a specific course of action or a specific bidder.
